The Magic Hour: National Sunrise and Sunset Exhibition

Hello friends,

Here is the official invitation to The Magic Hour, a national exhibition dedicated to sunrise and sunset landscape paintings at The Rice Gallery of Fine Art in Overland Park, Kansas.

The show opens on February 7th with an opening reception night at the gallery from 5-8pm.  If you are in the Kansas City area, I hope to see you there!  This is a competition, so there will also be an awards presentation that evening.  All paintings will be available for purchase.

The show runs from February 7 - March 13.  Please feel free to copy and share the invitation below on social media as you wish.

I just delivered my painting at the gallery today, and had a chance to catch a glimpse of some of the other pieces.  I definitely have my work cut out for me, so again, I would love to see you and have your support for my little painting, At The End Of The Day, on opening night.

Late to the Party: 2020 Projects

Hello art lovers,

We're already halfway through January, so I guess it's high time I dust this blog off and get back into the game.  Holiday season always does this to me.  I take a semi-break from working, and forget all about the people.  Sorry.  Anyway, here's the scoop for 2020.

I am projecting a very active year.  It is already beginning to stress me out a little.  You see, sometime around October last year, I was projecting somewhere between nine to ten shows for 2020 that I would be applying for at the very least.  As to whether I will be getting accepted for that many remains to be seen.  But here are my considerations, some of which are confirmed:

Hilliard Gallery Small Works Show 2019-2020 (in progress, thru January 25)
Rice Gallery of Fine Art National Sunrise and Sunset Show (confirmed, February 7 - March 13)
Blue Springs Fine Art Show (pending and likely, March 7-8)
Hilliard Gallery Contemporary Figurative Show (pending, April 3 - May 25)
NOAPS Small Painting Exhibition (pending, April 5 - May 3)
Images Gallery Juried Exhibition (uncertain, July-August)
Raytown Artists' Association Invitational (likely, August)
RG Endres Group Exhibition (pending, August-September)
RG Endres State of the Arts (uncertain, October)
NOAPS Best of America (uncertain, November)

Since it is now confirmed, I suppose it is a good time to start promoting The Magic Hour: National Sunrise and Sunset Exhibition at Rice Gallery of Fine Art in Overland Park, Kansas, which opens February 7th and continues through March 13th.
This is one of the more unique shows I've participated in.  I don't usually like doing themed shows, but I enjoy landscape painting, and specifically this show is centered around scenes of sunrises and sunsets.  The painting of mine that was selected is a small piece from 2018 called At The End Of The Day.

I had 5 entries for this show, and once again to my amazement, the one piece that was selected was certainly not the one I would have chosen.  But they liked it enough to select it, and for that I am grateful.  It's interesting how that works.  I honestly thought my other 4 entries were much stronger than this one, and honestly my jaw dropped yesterday afternoon when I received the notifications that they were not selected, but this one was.  It's not the only time that has happened for a show that I've applied for.  But it goes to show that sometimes there are paintings we do that we may not think too much of, but someone else out there just might like it enough to put it in a national show.  Don't underestimate yourselves, artists.

Aside from all the shows I'm going to try to enter, I am working on another big project for 2020, that may carry me over into 2021, but let's not think that far ahead.  I am working on a new series of works that I am hoping will work out well.  I won't say too much about it yet because it's still in a very early stage.  I have worked up a few drawing studies for it, and I have an underpainting for one of the pieces completed.

This is what I refer to as the conception stage.  It's still way to early to tell how all this will turn out.  It's mostly a matter of my heart and my brain doing a lot of work, and then jotting ideas down on paper in the form of drawings.  And if I like the ideas, I'll move forward with painting.  In the end, the series will have 9 paintings if I'm successful.

Anyway, because I know you are just dying to know, here are the 4 rejected pieces from the Sunset show.  A couple of which I have already entered into the NOAPS Small Works show, but the others are available directly from me now.
