What's To Come in '22

Hello all!

I hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas.  Yesterday I went over my goals from 2021, both accomplished and unaccomplished, and wrote out my goals for 2022.  I am looking forward to a very productive year with all sorts of new projects... some of which go beyond just new paintings.

  • First of all, I am looking forward to my new membership with the Missouri Valley Impressionist Society, which began last month with my work being accepted into the Juried Exhibition at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum in St. Joseph, Missouri.  The show is in the final stretch, but there is still time to see it, as it closes on January 9th.

  • I am currently working on new paintings as usual, and I am looking forward to expanding my Scenes of Creation series of landscape paintings in the coming year.  Currently I have a 12x24" canvas on the easel that I hope to knock out before 2022 gets here.  Still lots to do, and time is winding down.  But I think it can be done.
  • I have reduced the prices on every painting and drawing that I have available on Ebay, with the exception of my new 8x10" panels, which are listed at $80 each, with free shipping.  More are on the way soon!  Please check out my available paintings on Ebay here:  https://www.ebay.com/usr/ryandart
  • One of my new goals for 2022 is to once again revive my YouTube channel with new content on a little more consistent basis.  I know I've said that before, but with nearly 13,500 subscribers at the moment, I would be crazy not to reconnect with my channel and create new content for it.  It is currently my biggest platform online, and I'm really hoping it will play a role in the next couple of projects I have in mind for 2022.  If you haven't yet, please visit and subscribe to my YouTube channel here:  https://www.youtube.com/c/ryandelgadoart
  • So as I was saying, along with YouTube, I have two other major projects in mind for 2022 that I will keep a secret for now.  All I will say is that they are both online-based projects that will hopefully help more people connect with me and my work.  I am really excited, and hope that they can be a success.  I will be sharing more in the future, so please stay tuned!!!
That is all for now, please visit my links above and join me on Instagram as well @ryandelgadoart
Hope everyone has a great and safe new year!

MVIS Juried Exhibition: November 19 - January 9

Hello friends, time for a new show announcement that I'm very excited for.

I have recently joined a new organization called the Missouri Valley Impressionist Society, and I am so happy to announce that I've had three entries accepted into their 10th Annual Juried Exhibition at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph, Missouri.

The show runs from November 19th through January 9th, 2022, and the opening reception will be held on Friday, November 19th from 4-7pm at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum.

I entered three paintings, and all three were accepted.  I hope those of you in the area will be able to visit the show!

This year, I made the decision to forfeit my membership to NOAPS, the National Oil and Acrylic Painters' Society because I really did not feel I was getting the most out of that organization that I wanted.  I had been a member since 2015, but had very little to show for it in terms of show acceptance and success overall.  And I simply felt it wasn't for me at this time.  Although, I do appreciate the opportunities and small successes that I did have as a member.  Perhaps another day I will consider rejoining NOAPS.

Joining MVIS has been on my mind for some time now, but I never got around to doing so until last month.  I don't consider myself an "impressionist" painter necessarily, especially when it comes to my figurative work.  And I know that MVIS doesn't necessarily disqualify any artists on that basis.  They simply require that your work be in a representational style.  But to me it seems more fitting if it is impressionistic since it's in the name, afterall.  This is one reason I have begun focusing more on landscape and nature as a subject in my work.  The subject lends itself to such a style and technique, and recently I've been exploring the many different textures and effects that my brushes and other tools can create on the painting surface, not to mention color and light.  Lately, I have been very interested in the idea of creating definitive focal points, and painting scenes of nature the way our eyes see nature.  When our eyes are looking at something, they are focused solely on that particular thing, and everything else is in our peripheral vision - off to the side and out of focus.  What matters in that moment is what our eyes are focused on.

Recently, I was looking through Richard Schmid's Alla Prima book and found a painting of his that captures perfectly what I'm talking about.  It's a 2006 landscape of his called Captain John's House:

Richard Schmid
Captain John's House
oil on canvas, 11x10", 2006.
p. 139, Alla Prima II

The clear focal point that Schmid wants us to look at is the house itself, while everything else in the rest, and majority, of the painting is very loosely sketched in.  From the trees and minor buildings in the right background to even the bits of grass and small twigs in the foreground.  None of that matters to the eyes when they are focused on the house.  This scene is painted to simulate the way our eyes focus on things.

Schmid has defined "impressionism" very simply.  To paraphrase him:  "Up close, nothing.  Standing back, everything."  I honestly see that as essential painting altogether, not just in impressionism.  Paint is naturally an abstract material.  Beyond it being pigment and binder, it has no rational meaning until it is manipulated in such a way as to represent something else.  So this is the definition of all representational painting.

You can always tell an artist when you see him at a museum.  He'll be the one trying to get as close as he possibly can to the painting to study the brushwork and the goobers of paint before some museum staff member walks over and tells him to step back.  Everyone else is there to look at the paintings, and usually from a distance.  Because unless you are an artist, who cares about what the paint looks like up close?

Well, this went from being a simple announcement about this upcoming show to a philosophical tangent about impressionism and representational painting.  So I'll stop there, and just say this:

November 19 - January 9, Albrect-Kemper Museum of Art, St. Joseph, Missouri.  Hope you can make it!

New Works and Updates 10/22/21

Hello friends, time for a few updates!

I have recently completed three new small works on panel, and they are available for purchase now, and will be available on Ebay eventually if they don't sell before then.

Each of these small paintings is painted on 8x10 panels and are currently not framed.  However, the third piece shown here with the waterfall has future plans pending at the moment.  A frame has been ordered for it, and I plan on entering it for a show very soon.

Which brings me to my second bit of news, and that is I have recently joined the Missouri Valley Impressionist Society as a new member, and my first order of business as a new member is to enter the upcoming Juried Exhibition to take place at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum in St. Joseph, Missouri.  Over the past few years, I have taken a greater interest in landscape painting, in which I have been able to explore a more loose and impressionistic approach to painting that is a much different and fun change of pace from my more traditional and indirect approach to figurative and portrait painting.  This is not to say that I've quit portrait and figurative painting.  By no means!  But I will be putting a lot more emphasis and focus on landscape and nature painting, and continuing to develop and hone my skill in alla prima techniques.  I am really looking forward to the community of artists in the MVIS, many of whom I already know well.

More to come soon on the MVIS and the Juried show.

I'd also like to remind everyone that the PVAC State of the Arts show is currently online, and my painting In The Light is available for purchase through the Prairie Village Arts Council webstore.  The show and the online store can be viewed here:

That is all the news for now.  Please stay tuned for more soon!

Studio Updates 9/30/21

The fall season is here, and here is what's new in the studio:

  • The State of the Arts Exhibition in Prairie Village, KS has gone virtual yet again this year much to my frustration and annoyance.  But the good news is that one of my paintings has been accepted for the online show.  My painting In The Light will be featured, and is also available for purchase.  The show will be posted on October 4th and will continue through December 4th.  People's Choice online voting will take place from October 4 - 14th.  More details to come soon!
  • Among one of my entries that was not accepted into the State of the Arts show is a new landscape piece that I completed recently called Hideaway.  This painting is also available from me, and priced at $1100 for anyone interested.  To inquire, please send me an email at ryandelgadoart@gmail.com with the Subject line: "Hideaway".

Photo References VS. Painting from Life - New YouTube Video

A new video is up on my YouTube channel.  This is a time lapse of an alla prima landscape painting along with some commentary on the topic of using photo references in our works of fine art.

There is certainly nothing wrong with using photos to create our paintings, but what is the best way to use them, and why is direct observation of nature so important?  Well, that discussion is in the video, and you can check it out below.

Plus, if you like the painting I did in this video, you can purchase it from me by sending me a message at ryandelgadoart@gmail.com with the Subject line: "Split Falls painting".  Thanks for watching and please share and subscribe to my channel!

"Free Bird" - A Time Lapse Video

Today, I finally dusted off the YouTube channel and made a quick little time lapse video of a recent oil sketch on canvas.

I am still working on the video for the waterfall painting I did a couple of weeks ago.  I've nearly finished recording the commentary.  I have a little bit left to do before I render the finished video.  Then it's just a matter of posting it to YouTube.  But I thought this quick bit of footage would hold you all over for now.

This is just a quick sketch, but may turn into a larger or more carefully composed painting at another time.

New Painting + Upcoming YouTube Video??

Hello everyone,

I recently finished a little 11x14" alla prima painting.  I enjoyed my previous waterfall piece so much that I did another.

I also just happened to record this painting on video, and I'm in the process of editing it down as a time lapse video for YouTube.  It's been nearly two years since I last published anything on my YouTube channel, and I'm hoping I can do a little more on there soon (as I've frequently said over the past year or so).  The thing that's kept me away for so long is simply the amount of time and work that goes into editing and uploading, not to mention even recording for that matter.  I do enjoy it, but it's so time consuming, and the perfectionist in me doesn't help matters.

But for this one, I'm planning on taking the video down to about 15 minutes and recording a voice over commentary.  Shouldn't be too much work, right?  I guess we'll see.

Here is a little screen shot of the video, along with the finished piece below:

Split Falls
oil on linen, 11x14"
Available for purchase, inquire at ryandelgadoart@gmail.com

Altogether, the painting took around 2.5 hours.  It is available for purchase, and as always you may message me at ryandelgadoart@gmail.com to inquire.  I am hoping to publish the video in the next week or so.  Depending on how perfect I need it to be.  I haven't decided what the commentary will be about... if it will be strictly narrative about what I'm doing in the painting, or if I'll cover broad topics in oil painting.  Possibly a combination of both, but there's a whole lot I could cover and only 15 minutes worth of video.  So it will be abbreviated as the video itself is.

Stay tuned, and if you would like to check out my YouTube page, please visit and Subscribe here:  https://www.youtube.com/c/RyanDelgadoArt

New Works in June-July 2021

Hello!

I've been working on a lot of different things this summer, and here it all is:

Above are a few mini panels, 4x6" oil on linen.  My plan is to put these on Ebay as they are, unframed for around $60-$75 or so.  I have a limited number of them, but I may order some more panels soon, depending on if they do well in selling.  I have many more small works still available on Ebay, including my framed 6x6" works.  Please check those out here:  https://www.ebay.com/usr/ryandart

My most recent painting is a larger version of the waterfall painting above.  It is the first larger painting (larger than 11x14") that I've done in a while that I completed in true alla prima fashion, taking me around 6 hours to complete.  This one is 24x18", oil on stretched linen, and I've titled it Living Water:

Living Water
oil on linen, 24x18"
Please message me at ryandelgadoart@gmail.com for pricing

I've completed a few small pieces that are available directly from me, and if you are interested in purchasing any of these paintings, please message me at ryandelgadoart@gmail.com.  The two below are both 8x10, oil on linen mounted on panel.  I haven't titled them yet, but if you are interested and would like to inquire, please copy and attach the pictures on your email so I'll know which ones you are asking about.

Finally, I've been working on a few figurative drawings and matting them to hopefully sell on Ebay as well.  I have not decided yet if I will be framing them, or selling them as matted works only.  The drawings are all 6x9" and matted at 9x12".  So far I have completed six, and hope to do more soon.

In addition to all of these works, I have two shows happening this month:

First of course is the Stems Plein Air Exhibition at the Rice Gallery of Fine Art in Overland Park, Kansas.  That show continues through the end of July, and my featured painting titled No Vehicles Beyond This Point is still available for purchase for $425 at the gallery, and through the gallery's webstore.  Please check out the show or visit the webstore to purchase my little 6x8 piece!

And opening this Friday at the Images Gallery in Overland Park is the 2021 Images Gallery Juried Exhibition.  I have three paintings showing, and you can check them out in person starting this Friday, July 16th through Friday the 13th of August!  The Images Gallery is located at 7320 W. 80th St. in Overland Park, Kansas.
