Stems Plein Air 2021

New show coming up!

The 2021 Stems Plein Air Exhibition is coming to The Rice Gallery of Fine Art in Overland Park, Kansas from July 2nd - 31st.  

This will be my second time ever doing the Stems Plein Air show, and I am happy that I have a little painting called No Vehicles Beyond This Point accepted.  This is a small 6x8 oil on linen panel, and it's from one of my frequent hiking trails.  I painted it in May, so of course it had been raining a lot, and there were several days straight when there was no sunshine at all.  And I think it made for a great scene with the overcast lighting and the many muddy puddles breaking up the ground.  Since the light was filtered so well by the clouds, it was fun playing with a rich assortment of color.  That can be pretty hard to do on a bright sunshiny day in a location where there is not much but a lot of green grass, green bushes, and green trees.  The danger is putting way to much green in your painting and nothing else (which I've done before with plein air paintings).

2021 Blue Springs Fine Art Show

This weekend, June 5-6, was the 2021 Blue Springs Fine Art Show, in Blue Springs, Missouri.  It was certainly a pleasant surprise to see a great turnout of artists and viewers at the show, as it had been postponed from its usual date in March.

This year was my 12th time entering the show, and it has always been one of my favorite each year.  I was happy to receive word on Friday evening that both of my paintings were awarded ribbons in their respective categories.

Be Thou My Vision won 2nd Place Portrait, and The Passage received 1st Place in the Opaque category and to my surprise, it also received a 2nd Place People's Choice honor.

The Passage will be on display at the north branch of the Blue Springs Mid-Continent Public Library through the end of June.  The library is located at 850 NW Hunter Dr. in Blue Springs, just north of I-70.
