YouTube Vlog: First Works of 2019 pt 3

The first two paintings of 2019 are coming along.  Here is the latest vlog showing their progress.  In the first segment I work on the grisaille for the larger portrait piece, and then in the second part I work up the first layer of color on the smaller figurative piece.

At this point, I've already finished the first color stage on the portrait, and I'm planning on making the next vlog documenting that and the second color layer as well.  Hopefully the figurative piece will be finished with its next painting session.  So stay tuned for more.  Again, thanks for watching and subscribing to my channel!

YouTube Vlog: First Works of 2019 - Grisaille

The latest YouTube vlog is posted, and features the completion of the grisaille layer on one of my new works in progress.  Here is the newest video:

Today I finished the grisaille on the second piece, and it was quite the uphill battle.  The next vlog will feature that process.  After painting so much gray, I am ready to get into color as soon as I can!  Here is a first look at the finished grisaille for the second piece:

I can still see a few adjustments that need to be made and issues to resolve, but I will be able to make those adjustments as I move into the first color stage.  At that point, I'll be able to do more refinement with edges, and additional work with values.  As this grisaille dries, the values will go slightly darker, so I will have to brighten the lights as I work with color.

Until then, I hope you all are enjoying this process.  And with the weather we've been having lately, it's been a perfect opportunity to spend time in the studio and to record it all for you.  Stay tuned as we move into the first color stage next!

New Works in Progress

Hello!

We're mid-way through January already, so I thought I'd share a little bit of what I'm currently working on.

I have two figurative pieces in progress.  They are as of yet untitled, but here is a peek at what they currently look like:

I have also started what you might call a new season of YouTube vlogs.  And this time I'm actually doing them in more of a vlog format - just sharing what I'm working on as part of my regular studio sessions.  I'll be recording a little bit of my painting process, and you'll get to see each painting progress and come to life from its understructure to its final touches.  I just thought it would be fun to document the making of my paintings, so I hope you enjoy.  Here is the first part of this series, giving you a look at the underpainting stage of both of these works:

Thanks for watching, and please subscribe to my YouTube channel if you want, and also Like and Share!  More to come soon...

New Year Updates

It's been a little too long, but the holiday hiatus is over and it's time to work!

I believe I left you all off back in October with the State of the Arts show.  Well, it was fun and I (finally) got my Honorable Mention award.  That's another story.  Let's just say it took way longer than it should have for my check to arrive, but it finally did, so all is right with the world now.

Since then, I painted a new piece called Hallowed.  Like Scarred for Life, I felt inspired to do another re-working of an old painting from my college days.  This one took some time, and even a little research.  I even learned to speak a little old Galilean Aramaic for this piece.  Yeah, no kidding.  It incorporates an Aramaic version of the Lord's Prayer in written form as part of the background.  It is a simple piece about the power of prayer in its genuine, humble state.

So that brings us to 2019.  After taking a few weeks to rest and have some Christmas cheer, I am happy to start off the new year with some good news.  I have an itsy bitsy painting making its way to RS Hanna Gallery in Fredericksburg, TX for the National Oil and Acrylic Painters' Society Best of America Small Works Exhibition, March 1 - April 6.  It's only a 6x8" piece, so I hope it won't get lost and unnoticed at this show, which is sure to have a whole lot of amazing work.

Those are pretty much all the updates I have so far.  But 2019 is well underway now, and I am sure that there are plenty more things to come.  I will be submitting work for a gallery show in KC Crossroads very soon.  Once I have an update on that, I will be sharing it right away.  Other than that, be on the lookout for more show announcements, painting updates, and YouTube vlogs coming up for 2019!  Lots more to come!
