Studio Updates, November 2020

Hello and greetings from the studio!

We are fast approaching the end of 2020 (Thank God Almighty), and I wanted to update you on what is coming up and what is happening now.

  • First off, I want to announce my entry in the State of the Arts virtual exhibition, presented by the Prairie Village Arts Council (Prairie Village, KS).  This year, the show is strictly an online event taking place on PVAC's website, and the link for the show will go live this Friday, November 13th.  My entry for this year is Beside Still Waters, a 20x16" oil on linen figurative piece from 2019.  I will have more information on the show and People's Choice voting this Friday.

  • Second, I would like to invite you to join me on Parler!  I just joined Parler last night and I would love it if you would give me a follow if you're on it too.  As a fine artist and an American, I am a freedom-loving, anti-censorship individual, and yes even I have been censored on Facebook.  I am hoping that this new social media platform has a promising future.  I will still be on FB and Instagram as well, but Parler will be an additional place for you to join me in my ongoing mission to make art great again.  My Parler handle is @RyanDArt.  Join me!

  • I will soon be receiving notification on the Images Gallery Juried exhibition, which has also decided to go strictly virtual this year.  I have entered three paintings, and I should know by Monday, November 16th if any have been selected for the show.  My three entries for the show are This Is The Day That The Lord Has Made, Patience, and Washed By The Water.

2020 Stems Plein Air Juried Exhibition

Hello friends!

This is my personal invitation for all of you to check out the 2020 Stems Plein Air Juried Exhibition pre-sale, which is now live online at The Rice Gallery of Fine Art website:

The show will not have a regular opening reception, unfortunately.  However, the online show is live, and pre-sale has begun.  The gallery will be open to view the show in person beginning August 10th.  All of the typical coronavirus protocols will be in place:  mask-wearing, distancing, limited number of people in the gallery at a time, etc.

The Rice Gallery of Fine Art is located at 4829 W. 119th St. in Overland Park, KS.  I hope you will have the opportunity to see the show in person, but most definitely take advantage of this online peek and sale of the show!

My painting Waterfowl Marsh is a 9x12" oil on panel, and is available for $750.  The marsh is a little somewhat hidden place located at a local wildlife area near my home.  Around this time of year, I knew there would be a mess of waterlilies, and I wanted to take advantage of that.  Here is how my painting turned out, and how it is currently displayed and for sale:

July 2020 Update

It dawned on me today that I have not updated since April.

Coronavirus pandemics make you forget sometimes.  But today was a day for catching up and setting things straight for me anyway.

I had to make a call to the McBride Gallery up in Annapolis, MD today because I've been a little concerned about my painting from the NOAPS Small Paintings exhibition from way back in April.  The show was originally supposed to end in May, but due to the coronavirus stuff happening, they very generously decided to extend the show into June.  See, a few good things have come of this.

Anyway, the last official day of the show was June 7th.  Today is July 13th, and I have not gotten my painting back yet, so I had to call them to see what was going on.  Turns out that although my painting has not sold, it's been getting some attention apparently.  It sounds like there are a few eyeballs on it, and the gallery has been wanting to hold on to it for a little bit more to see if it gets any bites.  So I told them of course!  Please keep the painting as long as you'd like!  So, if any of you out there might be interested, my painting Outcast is still available from McBride Gallery for now.  You may inquire at cynthia@mcbridegallery.com

I also decided today that it was time to head out to Blue Springs and finally pick up my paintings from the library that have been there since the Blue Springs show in March.  I was happy to see they took great care of them during their extended stay.

For my fellow Kansas City folks, the Contemporary Figurative show at Hilliard Gallery in the Crossroads is still up!  I actually have no idea when it's supposed to come down, but it's been up since May.  Anyway, there I have my painting Contrition on display and available for purchase as well.  The gallery is open, and you may also see the virtual show from the website https://hilliardgallery.com and you may inquire about my painting by calling the gallery at 816-561-2956.

I have also been accepted into my first Stems Plein Air Juried Exhibition, which opens on Friday, July 31st at The Rice Gallery of Fine Art in Overland Park, Kansas.  I will have a small painting at this show called Waterfowl Marsh, which is a fun little part of a local wildlife area near my home.  The painting itself measures 9x12 on panel.  More info will come on the tentative opening reception.  As of now, it's not certain whether there will be an official opening reception on the 31st or not.  It depends on the status of all things coronavirus.  If there is, it will include mask wearing/social distancing precautions.  I have not decided personally if I will attend or not.  Again, depends on how things are looking.

Finally, I wanted to let everyone know that my Ebay painting sales are still going!  That was the last thing I updated about on this blog back in April.  I currently have 15 auctions, and I already know I am selling one today.  Please check out all my available small affordable paintings!  I've sold quite a few since April, and will continue to keep them up.  To see my available auctions, please visit my Ebay page at https://www.ebay.com/usr/ryandart

Thanks for the support!  Please stay tuned for more updates on new work and shows!

Reviving Ebay

Starting this week (Monday, 4/20 to be exact), I began posting some paintings to Ebay once again.  So here's the idea:

It's been some years since I had anything on Ebay.  It just got to be to the point where nothing was selling, and I got tired of relisting stuff.  But lately, I've been wanting to get back on and see if I could make a few extra dollars with some old and new paintings.

What's fun to note is that I got my start as a full time professional by making a few small still life paintings and listing them on Ebay.  This was in 2009, I think.  I started out with about 5 or 6 paintings that were completed relatively quickly, and then I put them on Ebay for about $50 each.  Turns out, there were people who liked them, and some of them even got multiple bids.  I ended up selling all of them, and realized I needed to get busy making more.

Fast forward 11 years, and I've managed to sell major pieces to a few loyal collectors, and I've had work in a number of galleries and shows locally and nationally.  None of it has been easy, and it still continues to be a huge challenge.  But one thing I've realized is that it also feels a bit exclusive.  After all, not everyone can afford to collect fine art.  So I've decided to try something that I hope can benefit everyone, including myself.

For the next several weeks, I am posting some of my older paintings on Ebay for some nice, budget-friendly prices for anyone to enjoy.  I will also be working on brand new pieces very soon that will be exclusively for Ebay.  They are all going to be small works, no larger than 11x14", and I will be completing them using inexpensive but good quality materials that I am familiar with and have used before.  However, they won't necessarily be my top-of-the-line professional materials that I use in my typical gallery work.  I am also limiting completion time of each painting to around 3 hours, start to finish.  My hope is to complete a lot of pieces in a relatively short amount of time, and price them low for Ebay auctions - Starting bids at $50 or less.

I hope you will check out my Ebay page and consider bidding on my available pieces.  As I said, there are some already listed, and there will be more to come soon.

Please visit my page https://www.ebay.com/usr/ryandart to see the list and bid.  And be sure to keep watching for new listings and re-listings of pieces that don't sell during their auction period.

Thanks to everyone for your support!

April 2020 Available Paintings: Scenes of Creation

Today I wanted to share just a few selections of my landscape paintings that are currently available.  I call my ongoing series of landscape work Scenes of Creation.  They are simply my representations of God's creation, and my own visual expression of God's voice speaking, "Be still, and know that I am God.  I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." -Psalm 46:11

To inquire about pricing for any of these works, please email me at ryandelgadoart@gmail.com, and please use the title of the work in the Subject line.  Thank you for your support.

For Such A Time As This

Artists, this is when your calling is at its peak.

There is no question that one of the hardest professions in the world, especially right now, is the medical field.  In addition, those in law enforcement, teaching, the Church, and yes even government have a crucial role to play right now.

But what about artists?  What is our role?  And is it important?  I don't think it could be any more important than it is right now.  And here's why:

We are in the business of creating and presenting beauty to the world.  And let's face it, the world is chaotic right now.  Whether it's justified or manufactured, there is worry and fear, and that is something that spreads faster than any virus.  So, while people are in self-quarantine, I can fairly well bet they are looking for ways to get their minds off of the craziness around them.  Enter: The artist.

It's interesting to note that the more independent people become, the more creative they become.  At least that's my experience.  I work completely on my own as an artist, and over the years I've not only had to become more creative as a painter, but as a professional.  There is a lot of trial and error that goes into being self-employed, and I'm still learning as I go.  Same goes for those of us trying to come up with ways to keep ourselves entertained and sustained as we go through this strange time.  We're being creative because we have to be.  I often hear people say to me, "I wish I was creative."  Trust me, you are.  And this season we're in may be proving that to you right now.  Whether it's finding ways to connect with people, ways to self-entertain, ways to make money, etc.  We're having to be creative about it.  God built you that way.  You are His creation, made in His image, and therefore you are a creator too.  God created us out of love, and our reason for creating should also be as such.

But artists are on a different level of creativity.  Those seeking out ways to take their eyes and minds off of the chaos are turning to artists - be it fine art, music, film, or literature.  It is our calling to be the creators of beauty to remedy the ugly.

I'm not an idealist by any means.  I don't try to be.  I live in the real world.  But I know that sometimes my work has affected people in a positive way more so than I intended it.  I know this because people at my shows have told me directly.  I say this not to boast, but to say to artists:  Your calling is a great one.  Sometimes all I try to do is literally "paint a pretty picture."  But sometimes that pretty picture transcends my intent for it.  You may look at your own creation and think it's nothing special or has its flaws, and that may be the only thing you see in it.  But you have no idea who else is looking at it and sees the sublime in it, and is profoundly comforted by it.

I love the joke I see about this virus in regards to artists - You may see self-quarantine and social distancing as a huge inconvenience to your life.  I see my daily routine.  Funny, but it's got some truth to it.  I have honestly not done much of anything different in response to the pandemic or national/state declarations/advisories, etc that I normally do day to day.  Still working every day.  Still washing my hands as often as I usually do.  After all, I work with some nasty materials and it requires hand-washing often.  But the one thing that has me concerned is how it affects shows, and the people who will not be attending those shows.  My work is dependent on eyes seeing it.  And if eyes are not seeing it, then it hurts my mission and purpose as a professional, and the success of those paintings.

With that said, I do still have shows happening now, and more upcoming.  But I would also ask if you haven't yet, please follow me on Facebook and Instagram to see what I'm up to, shows where my work is available, and the new pieces I'm working on.  And as always, please don't hesitate to inquire about a work that you are interested in.  Send me a message at ryandelgadoart@gmail.com.  And lastly, do whatever you can to look at art.  Allow it slow your life down and bring peace.

Finally, to you artists:  Get to work.

The Fruit of the Spirit

I've been working lately on a new small series of paintings based on the Fruit of the Spirit that we read about in Paul's letter to the Galatians in chapter 5:  "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  Against such things there is no law."

I don't think anyone can disagree that we're currently living in some volatile times.  It's ugly.  It's divisive.  And it doesn't appear as though it will get better anytime soon.  I think the most important part of this short verse from Galatians is the part where Paul says, "Against such things there is no law."  This means that the fruit of the Spirit is more than simply theoretical concepts that sound nice for an idealistic, perfect world.  These are things we are supposed to be practicing every day, and if we don't we're contributing to the chaotic ugliness and lawlessness of society.  These aren't suggestions.  They're commandments.

Beauty is such a hard thing to define.  But if anything, I hope my work is a representation of beauty and inspiration for others.  With this series, I'm going to try to paint each of these nine words listed as the "fruit of the Spirit."  Obviously they are all broad words and can mean a lot of different things.  So I'm simply letting the Spirit lead me in each one as I visualize and conceptualize the images for each painting.

So far I have completed two of the nine.  As I consider them, I've found myself returning to a certain mood of calm and stillness that I had in my figurative works some years ago before I began my God-Breathed series, which were a far more bold direction visually for me.

Currently, I am working on the next piece for the series, Love.  I'm still working on drawing studies for others, and figuring out the direction I want to go with them.  It's proving to be a challenge, but hopefully I will have the series completed by the end of 2020, or the beginning of next year as my show schedule continues to grow this year.

Please stay tuned for more as I complete new works for this series as well as other new paintings along the way.

As a reminder for my Kansas City friends, this weekend I will have work available in two shows - The "Scape" exhibition at Hilliard Gallery opens tomorrow, March 6th and continues through April 22nd.  Also, the Blue Springs Fine Art Show will be at Vesper Hall on Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8th, and I will have two paintings available in that show.

  • NOAPS Best of America Small Paintings Exhibition is coming to McBride Gallery of Fine Art in Annapolis, Maryland from April 5 - May 3, 2020.  This year, 150 paintings out of over 1000 entries were selected for the show, and I'm thrilled to say my painting Outcast is among those selected.  I will not personally be present for the show itself, but I would just ask your support and prayer for good things.  It is a juried competition, and it is fierce.  The Grand Prize winner receives $3000 among other accolades, and there are other award categories up for grabs as well.  Last year, I was fortunate to have a painting in this show, which took place at RS Hanna Gallery in Fredericksburg, TX, and while I didn't win any awards, I was excited to learn that it had sold during the show.  Anything is possible!  If you aren't in the Annapolis area, or will be able to attend the show but would like to inquire about my painting, please contact me at ryandelgadoart@gmail.com or  McBride Gallery at (410) 267-7077 or email Cynthia@mcbridegallery.com

Late to the Party: 2020 Projects

Hello art lovers,

We're already halfway through January, so I guess it's high time I dust this blog off and get back into the game.  Holiday season always does this to me.  I take a semi-break from working, and forget all about the people.  Sorry.  Anyway, here's the scoop for 2020.

I am projecting a very active year.  It is already beginning to stress me out a little.  You see, sometime around October last year, I was projecting somewhere between nine to ten shows for 2020 that I would be applying for at the very least.  As to whether I will be getting accepted for that many remains to be seen.  But here are my considerations, some of which are confirmed:

Hilliard Gallery Small Works Show 2019-2020 (in progress, thru January 25)
Rice Gallery of Fine Art National Sunrise and Sunset Show (confirmed, February 7 - March 13)
Blue Springs Fine Art Show (pending and likely, March 7-8)
Hilliard Gallery Contemporary Figurative Show (pending, April 3 - May 25)
NOAPS Small Painting Exhibition (pending, April 5 - May 3)
Images Gallery Juried Exhibition (uncertain, July-August)
Raytown Artists' Association Invitational (likely, August)
RG Endres Group Exhibition (pending, August-September)
RG Endres State of the Arts (uncertain, October)
NOAPS Best of America (uncertain, November)

Since it is now confirmed, I suppose it is a good time to start promoting The Magic Hour: National Sunrise and Sunset Exhibition at Rice Gallery of Fine Art in Overland Park, Kansas, which opens February 7th and continues through March 13th.
This is one of the more unique shows I've participated in.  I don't usually like doing themed shows, but I enjoy landscape painting, and specifically this show is centered around scenes of sunrises and sunsets.  The painting of mine that was selected is a small piece from 2018 called At The End Of The Day.

At The End Of The Day

I had 5 entries for this show, and once again to my amazement, the one piece that was selected was certainly not the one I would have chosen.  But they liked it enough to select it, and for that I am grateful.  It's interesting how that works.  I honestly thought my other 4 entries were much stronger than this one, and honestly my jaw dropped yesterday afternoon when I received the notifications that they were not selected, but this one was.  It's not the only time that has happened for a show that I've applied for.  But it goes to show that sometimes there are paintings we do that we may not think too much of, but someone else out there just might like it enough to put it in a national show.  Don't underestimate yourselves, artists.

Aside from all the shows I'm going to try to enter, I am working on another big project for 2020, that may carry me over into 2021, but let's not think that far ahead.  I am working on a new series of works that I am hoping will work out well.  I won't say too much about it yet because it's still in a very early stage.  I have worked up a few drawing studies for it, and I have an underpainting for one of the pieces completed.

This is what I refer to as the conception stage.  It's still way to early to tell how all this will turn out.  It's mostly a matter of my heart and my brain doing a lot of work, and then jotting ideas down on paper in the form of drawings.  And if I like the ideas, I'll move forward with painting.  In the end, the series will have 9 paintings if I'm successful.

Anyway, because I know you are just dying to know, here are the 4 rejected pieces from the Sunset show.  A couple of which I have already entered into the NOAPS Small Works show, but the others are available directly from me now.
